FAQ
Copper Prices:
A big chunk of wire cost is copper. This commodity has in the past bounced around
quite often. Our copper is re-priced twice a month. Generally we don't change our
prices unless there is a big move or a lot of little moves that add up to a big
change in the raw material price. So, all quotes are good for at least one month.
We'll post a notice on quotes over one month if the copper price has changed the quote.
Wire Lengths:
Our standard wire lengths for units stripped on both ends goes from 2" to over 30' -
units with only one side stripped or no stripping can be as small as 0.08". The strip
sections can range from 0.08in to 3.9". We can do other dimensions by hand if needed.
Tolerances generally are:
Cut length 2" to15" ± 1/8", 16" to 120" ± 1/4", 121" to 194" ± 3/8",
195"up ± 1/2", Stripped length - ± 1/16
Wire Type:
Our high volume wires are what we refer to as 1015-tinned hookup wire. This wire is also
UL1011/1028/1032/1230/1231/1335/1344/TEW in 8 through 26 AWG. All but 24 and 26 AWG are
MTW rated. These are made of moisture resistant PVC (polyvinylchloride) insulation rated
VW-1, Rated for 600Volts (except to the 1032 std -1000Volts) The 8 AWG to 16WG is also
Marine approved under UL 1426, BC-5W2, SAE, J378, USCG, ABYC and NMMA. - Basically a very
good all round multistrand insulated wire.
MTW rated: Machine Tool Wire, a thermoplastic insulated wire rated to
194°F-221°F (90°C -MTW , 105°C-UL&CSA) and 600V.
AWG - American Wire Gauge. A very common wire gauge system used in the US where
the smaller the number the bigger the wire developed around 1857. Click here for more info
VW-1 - Vertical wire flame test. This uses a small tirrill burner (similar to a
Bunsen burner) is used as the ignition source applying under 1kW for 5, 15 second applications
with no more then 15 seconds in between each step. After that the wire should burn for
more then one minute and should not burn more the 25% of the indicator flag attached to
the paper.
ABYC - American Boat and Yacht Council - develops consensus safety standards for the
design, construction, equipage, maintenance, and repair of small craft.
NMMA - National Marine Manufacturers Association. The trade association representing
the US recreational boating industry.
In an extra two days or so we can also do many other wire types as well as shrink tubing,
insulation, and solid wire.
Ask the WIREGURU. Actually our wire guru is not all knowing - however he can learn and will
get you the answers you seek.
